The Järvenpää City Council meeting on 5 February 2024 will discuss the letter of intent between the City and an international real estate investment company and a data centre operator, as well as the related conditional land lease and subsequent sale of the land. The object of the letter of intent is a 9,9 hectare plot of land with a building capacity of 60 000 m2 , located at Emalikatu 13 in the Vähänummi business park. The sale price is EUR 2,5 million. The parties' objective is that, after feasibility studies, a data centre of significant size and functionality will be built on the site.

Following the decision of the City Council and the subsequent discussion by the City Council, the international real estate investment company and the data centre operator will be able to make a more detailed assessment of the suitability of the site and location for the data centre project after the preliminary studies have already been carried out. Key elements of the review include the study of electricity availability, district heating networks and telecommunications connections, as well as a multifaceted cooperation with Finnish construction companies.

In addition to the city's economic and employment objectives, the quality criteria and objective is to utilise the waste heat from the data centre, the so-called "useful heat", which will contribute to the green transition and further strengthen the city's carbon neutrality in a significant way. As the project progresses, the real estate investment company and the data centre operator will make a long-term investment in Järvenpää, with a minimum initial target size of around €500 million. If implemented, this will have a positive impact on the real estate and construction sectors, among others.

Decisions on land acquisition and development will be taken later on the basis of feasibility studies. More details on the operation of the data centre, such as construction schedules, technical solutions and estimated employment impact, will be provided once the decisions on the project have been taken.

"The City of Järvenpää is very happy about this potential international data centre project, which, if implemented, will have significant environmental and economic impacts for the entire city and the wider region," says Harri Palviainen, City Development Director of Järvenpää.
