Järvenpää's first gas filling station has opened to strengthen the gas filling station network in Southern Finland

Gasum has opened its newest gas filling station in Järvenpää at Diggarinkatu 8 A. The station, located in the Boogie business park near the Lahti motorway, serves passenger traffic and medium-weight transport vehicles in the area by providing compressed biogas and natural gas. The increasing use of environmentally friendly fuels will contribute to the environmental objectives of both the city of Järvenpää and the entrepreneurs in the area.

The first gas filling station in Järvenpää will further strengthen the filling station network in Southern Finland. Located close to the Lahti motorway, the station will serve both passing and local traffic in the area, and will support the network of stations in Tuusula, Hyvinkää, Riihimäki and Porvoo. The station offers bio- and natural gas refuelling, suitable for both passenger cars and light distribution vehicles such as delivery and waste collection trucks.

With the new station, more and more residents and businesses in the Lake District will have the opportunity to refuel with an easy-to-use and more environmentally friendly fuel that will significantly reduce transport emissions. Savon Kuljetus Oy, which has expanded its operations from the Savo region to the capital region, has also chosen compressed biogas to power its new delivery trucks in order to reduce environmental pollution.

”Uusi Järvenpään asema tukee hyvin strategiaamme siirtyä kohti kaasulla kulkevaa kalustoa. Haluamme toimia puhtaan liikenteen edelläkävijänä ja olemme sitoutuneet käyttämään uusissa jakeluautoissamme ainoastaan biokaasua. Maaliskuuhun mennessä meillä tulee olemaan jo 10 biokaasukäyttöistä jakeluautoa Etelä-Suomen jakeluissa, joten kaasutankkausasemien lisääntymien alueella on erittäin hieno asia”, Savon Kuljetuksen liiketoimintajohtaja Kimmo Pekonen sanoo.

The popularity of gas is growing steadily

The popularity of gas has grown rapidly in Finland in recent years. The government aims to have 50,000 gas-powered cars on the road in Finland by 2030, but the rapid uptake of gas-powered vehicles means that this target will be reached ahead of schedule. The growing network of gas filling stations will bring more and more opportunities to move towards environmentally friendly fuel options.

"Reducing emissions from transport requires a wide range of instruments and a wide range of actors. Biogas is an important addition to more environmentally friendly mobility choices in Järvenpää and supports the city's goals to reduce emissions," says Eira Linko, Special Planner for the Environment in the City of Järvenpää.

"With the arrival of the gas station, local businesses have a good opportunity to think about their own environmental impact. For example, they could introduce cars that use renewable biogas," continues Susanna Aramo, the city's business services manager.

The number of gas cars on Finnish roads is expected to increase significantly in the coming years. This growth will be driven not only by the availability of gas, but also by the developing range of gas cars and the subsidies for the purchase of new gas cars. A subsidy for the purchase of gas-powered lorries and a scrappage premium for passenger cars came into force in December and will encourage private car drivers and businesses to switch to low-emission fuels.

"The role of gas in reducing emissions from road transport in Finland has been taken into account in national targets, and the roadmap for fossil-free transport also highlighted a wide range of measures to increase the number of gas cars. New gas refuelling stations, an evolving range of gas car models and cost-effective and low-emission fuel, together with the measures outlined in the roadmap, will enable us to achieve significant emission reductions in transport. With more and more people switching to environmentally friendly vehicles, the common climate targets are within easy reach," says Olli Paasio, Country Manager Finland, Gasum Transport.
